Why Is Roofing So Important?

What are the basics of roofing? Of all of the investments you will make in your home, roofing is one of the most important. A quality roof will protect so many other aspects of your home. On the flip side, if you have a poor quality roof, many other areas will be put at risk. In the long run, if you do not invest properly in your roofing system, you could wind up with a lot of damage and expenses later on. It is always better to go with a quality roof early on.

Roof Components

The first thing you need to know is the different components that make up a quality roof.

Covering – The covering is the most apparent aspect of the roof simply because it is the part you see the most. It can be made up of shingles, tiles, slate, or even metal. The covering is also made up of an underlayment. This part protects the sheathing from weather.

Sheathing – Another important aspect of the roof is the sheathing. This is the boards or sheet material that will be fastened to roof rafters.

Structure – This is made up of rafters or trusses that are made to support the sheathing.

Flashing – Flashing is comprised of sheet metal or other material installed into the joints and valleys of the roof. This component protects the roof from water in these vulnerable areas.

Drainage – A roof needs an adequate drainage system to ensure that water does not pool on the roof causing damage.

Types of Roof Systems

There are different types of roof systems to choose from. Having a roofing expert on your side is helpful when choosing a roof system. They can help advise you on which type of system will work best for your particular house.

Asphalt shingles – Asphalt shingles are a very popular option for most homes in the US. They are very useful when covering a steep slope roof. These are often reinforced with fiberglass material. These are popular as they are fire resistant.

Wood Shingles/Shakes – This type of covering is made from cedar, redwood, or southern pine. Other woods are also sometimes used. This type of covering is popular for its all-natural look. If you are interested in using wood shingles or shakes you will need to research your local building codes. Sometimes codes limit the use of this type of roof covering because it does not offer much fire protection.

Tile – Tile coverings are often made of clay or concrete. They are considered a very durable roofing material. They offer a wide variety of colors and shapes.
